What is VR CBT?
VR CBT is a modern form of therapy that uses virtual reality to deliver Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — a proven method for treating stress, anxiety, and chronic pain.
With a VR headset, you’ll practice calming exercises and mental health tools in immersive, easy-to-use environments — guided by a licensed clinician and covered by Medicare.
A Modern Approach to Remote Therapy
No need for clinic visits. Get therapy at home without sacrificing most of the benefits of in-person sessions.
Here's how it works:
1. Connect with a Better Health team member for an initial evaluation.
2. Receive the XRHealth VR CBT Device, covered by Medicare, in the mail, just like any other medical device.
3. Follow easy, step-by-step therapy programs for your therapy.
"It was like my private therapy. It was phenomenal. It was so much fun. I looked forward to it."
— Ellen M., received VR treatment for chronic neck and lower back pain
"It has absolutely changed my life. I don't have constant pain anymore. I felt like I was playing a game, but combined with traditional Physical Therapy."
—Stephanie Q., received VR treatment for lower back pain and stress
"My memory was improving. I was able to go into a room and remember why I was there."
— Irene K., received VR treatment for stress, anxiety and memory loss
XRHealth is a virtual reality (VR) therapy device designed to help you manage pain, stress, anxiety, and more—right from home. It’s a medical-grade system that delivers CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) programs through a VR headset, now classified as Durable Medical Equipment (DME) by Medicare.
You’ll receive a preloaded VR CBT device that guides you through therapy sessions designed by licensed clinicians. No apps, no setup, no clinic visits required.
XRHealth includes structured, evidence-based programs for:
Chronic pain Anxiety and stress Cognitive or neurological conditions Post-surgical recovery or rehabilitation Functional mobility and balance Exposure-based therapy for phobias Mindfulness and relaxation
All programs are clinically developed and preloaded onto your headset, ready to use.
XRHealth is designed for people who want to manage physical or emotional symptoms from home—including older adults, those recovering from surgery, or anyone struggling with pain, stress, or mobility. If you’re unsure if XRHealth is a fit, our care team can help assess your eligibility.
Once you’re approved, we ship your XRHealth device directly to your home. You’ll start with introductory VR CBT programs preloaded onto the headset—so you can get familiar with the experience and begin exploring at your own pace.
As the next step, we’ll match you with a licensed XRHealth clinician who will personalize your care plan, unlock additional therapy content, and guide you through your treatment journey.
You’ll have a virtual appointment with a licensed clinician (physical therapist, occupational therapist, or mental health provider—depending on your needs). They'll assess your condition, symptoms, and goals. Your clinician will create a treatment plan tailored just for you. You’ll use the headset to complete interactive therapy sessions from the comfort of home. You’ll meet regularly (virtually) with your clinician to track progress, adjust your plan, and keep you motivated. You’re never doing this alone—we’re here every step of the way.
If you have insurance:
Medicare Part B: Often covers the full cost of treatment, and many patients have little to no out-of-pocket expense. Some may have a small copay depending on their secondary insurance.
Medicare Advantage commercial insurance (e.g., BCBS Medicare Advantage, Aetna Medicare Advantage, etc.): Coverage varies by plan, but we’re happy to verify your benefits and let you know exactly what’s covered and what your responsibility (if any) would be.
Yes. XRHealth’s VR CBT device is covered under Medicare Part B as Durable Medical Equipment (DME), using CMS Code E1905. Once approved, the device is shipped to your home and your device and therapy is covered by Medicare—aside from your usual deductible or copay.
We’ll help verify your coverage as part of the onboarding process.
Yes, absolutely—you can do this treatment alongside in-person care! We would need to focus on something different from what you're actively working on in-person so there is no overlap with insurance billing. This might include:
Targeting a secondary condition (e.g., balance, posture, or stress management)
Addressing pain relief or mobility in a different area
Working on mental health or mindfulness support alongside physical rehab
In most cases, you do not need a referral or prescription from your doctor to get started — especially if you're using Medicare Part B or a Medicare Advantage commercial insurance plan that allows for direct access to physical or mental health services.
However, there are a few exceptions:
Some insurance plans or states may require a referral or signed plan of care.
If you're hoping to have the VR headset covered as durable medical equipment (DME), you will need a prescription from your doctor, however our team can assist you with obtaining one.
We provide a medical-grade VR headset that’s specifically configured with our therapy software and secure platform, which allows your clinician to monitor your progress and adjust your program remotely.
Using your own headset isn’t an option because:
Our software isn’t available through public app stores.
The headset needs to meet specific technical and medical standards.
We preload and configure everything for ease of use and HIPAA-compliant care.
No clinic visits are required. XRHealth is designed for at-home use, with all care delivered remotely. Once you're matched with a licensed clinician, your sessions and progress tracking happen virtually—no travel, no waiting rooms, just expert support from the comfort of your home.
